This paper examines the mechanisms employed by Italian-speaking learners in acquiring prefixed verbs in L2 Russian. To this end, a written cloze test was devised and administered to Italian university students at various proficiency levels in Russian, with the aim of assessing their ability to use such verbs in context. The findings, which draw on both quantitative and qualitative evaluations, identify the verb groups that pose greater challenges for L2 learners and offer a novel explanation for these difficulties, thereby providing valuable insights for L2 instruction.
