The Eucharisticos, composed by Paulinus of Pella in fifth-century Marseille, stands out for the contrast between the author’s professed gratitude for God’s mercy and the persistence of his aristocratic values – especially his attachment to property – that continue to shape his life after his conversion. This chapter examines Paulinus’ expressions of thanksgiving in the Eucharisticos, before focusing on the recurring theme of domus. A comparison with Paulinus’ literary models – Augustine’s Confessions, Paulinus of Nola’s poem 10, and the works of Ausonius – reveals the distinctiveness of his confession. Finally, the Eucharisticos is situated within the theological context of fifth-century southern Gaul, and the apologetic purpose of this unique account of conversion is highlighted.

Abstract
Finally, the Eucharisticos is situated within the theological context of fifth-century southern Gaul, and the apologetic purpose of this unique account of conversion is highlighted.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
