Internet of Musical Things for Smart Cities

The Internet of Musical Things (IoMusT) is an emerging paradigm in computing and communications that stems from the confluence of the IoT and music technology fields. In this chapter, we present our vision of how the IoMusT can express its potential for immersive, interactive, and more engaging experiences in smart cities, leading to the concept of smart musical cities. Smart cities are defined mainly by the way they can sense the environment and their citizens, and leverage collected data to create high-value-added services. In this context, we discuss how connected IoMusT devices, aided by 5G-and-beyond high-reliability and low-latency networking, can provide the last enabling technology to implement a number of connected applications, from networked music performances and audience involvement to interactions with virtual agents, from cultural heritage to pedagogy.
