The June 2024 EP election in Italy was an important electoral test for domestic politics and had relevant repercussions in EU politics. Domestically, it confirmed the solid consensus enjoyed by the Meloni-led government coalition, which took office in 2022. At the same time, the negative results of the ‘maverick party’ Five Star Movement (M5S) and, even more, of the centrist forces linked to Renew Europe strengthened the bipolar dynamic of Italian party politics. This new bipolarism rests on the predominance of the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) on one side of the political spectrum and of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) on the other side. At the supranational level, the solidity of the right-centre Italian government (vis-à-vis the relative weakness of the centrist/centre-left French and German governments) appears to have contributed, together with the overall EP election results, to triggering a potential right-ward shift of the centre of gravity of EU politics.
