Some settlements in Alpine areas, particularly those of a smaller and less developed nature, are cur-rently experiencing a worrying state of physical and environmental degradation. For several years, solutions have been sought to protect, preserve, and regenerate mountain areas’ natural and built environment. Many of these places continue to be abandoned and fragile and require the implementation of new strategies to regenerate the smaller Alpine centres. It is imperative to develop novel planning strategies that holistically and multidisciplinary analyse the natural and man-made landscape to comprehend the issues of underuse and abandonment. An illustra-tive case is the Terragnolo Valley in Trentino, where the confluence of abandonment and modernisation neces-sitates identifying solutions to restore vitality and functionality to small settlements. It is important to consider these small settlements in the context of their surrounding area, rather than as isolated entities. Rather than being viewed as a liability, these settlements offer an opportunity to reactivate the valley’s economic, social, landscape and architectural community.

Abstract
Rather than being viewed as a liability, these settlements offer an opportunity to reactivate the valley’s economic, social, landscape and architectural community.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
