The Greco-Roman sources that give information about the origin of the Rhaetians and their alleged origin from the Etruscans are considered, and an attempt is made to evaluate them in their relevant historical and cultural contexts. The idea of an Etruscan ethnogenesis of the Rhaetians was probably elaborated among the ancient Veneti no earlier than the late 4th century BC, and was referred to the Rhaetian groups settled in the middle Adige Valley. The sources from the early imperial age deal instead with the Rhaetians settled in the high valleys of the central Alps and in the transalpine region, against whom the Augustan war of 16-15 BC was fought.

Abstract
The Greco-Roman sources that give information about the origin of the Rhaetians and their alleged origin from the Etruscans are considered, and an attempt is made to evaluate them in their relevant historical and cultural contexts. The idea of an Etruscan ethnogenesis of the Rhaetians was probably elaborated among the ancient Veneti no earlier than the late 4th century BC, and was referred to the Rhaetian groups settled in the middle Adige Valley. The sources from the early imperial age deal instead with the Rhaetians settled in the high valleys of the central Alps and in the transalpine region, against whom the Augustan war of 16-15 BC was fought.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
