The revolutionary Smart Electro Magnetic Environment (SEME) concept is transforming the landscape of wireless system design, surpassing the capabilities of currentgeneration systems. SEME utilizes a combination of technologies to control the electromagnetic wave propagation according to network-defined performance objectives. Within this framework, static and reconfigurable Electromagnetic Skins (EMSs) have emerged as a fundamental enabler of the SEME vision. This work aims at reviewing recent advancements in the exploitation of EMSs for SEME applications, offering insights into cuttingedge design and implementation strategies.
