Una fantastica geografia delle fedi: Cristiani, 'Pagani' ed Ebrei nelle Riddarasögur originali

The texts belonging to the literary genre of the Chivalric sagas are very different from each other and each of them builds its own specific fictional universe. Particularly interesting are those sagas in which the Christian / pagan opposition overlaps and combines with two other oppositions: the human / monstrous and the courteous / non-courteous oppositions. The purpose of this article is to show how the interaction of such oppositions contributes, on the one hand, to determine the structure of the Icelandic Chivalric sagas and, on the other hand, to give literary form to the tensions, aspirations and worldviews present in Icelandic society in the decades following the island’s annexation to the Kingdom of Norway.
