This study investigates the use of a novel solvent-free, UV-curable coating as a corrosion protection layer for the inner surface of steel pipelines. The properties of the UV-cured film were fully characterized in terms of their thermomechanical properties, adhesion and resistance to heat. The coating was then applied on the inside of pipelines and cured in place using a patented LED lamp able to fit small cylinders. Finally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) characterization and accelerated aging tests were performed on the coated pipes to study the corrosion protection properties and the results compared to a commercially available thermally cured film. It was found that the UV-cured coating confers corrosion protection in harsh environments comparable to and in some cases higher than standard epoxy linings.
