Assessing the Legality of the EU Sanctions Imposed on the Russian Federation from 2022

This chapter aims to provide a legal assessment of the sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After a brief introduction to the legal issues that have arisen due to EU restrictive measures between 2014 and 2022, the chapter focuses on the sanctions adopted by the EU in coordination with G7 members and other states, from February 2022. Some critical issues that have emerged in this context will be examined on the basis of the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The listing process will be scrutinized to determine the robustness of the EU sanctions and, more broadly, the capacity of the EU judicial system to handle the new sanctions against Russia
