Sustainable Community Movement Organizations (SCMOs) are grassroots collective efforts to build alternative, productive, and sustainable networks of production and exchange by mobilizing citizens primarily (though not sexclusively) via their purchasing power (Forno & Graziano 2014). By acting on the market, such grassroots initiatives attempt to create new economic and cultural spaces for civic learning as well as consumerism activism with the aim to build and develop alternative markets based on knowledge exchange, solidarity, and mutual trust.
