This chapter maps network studies of social movements from two perspectives. It first looks at personal networks as facilitators of individual recruitment to collective action. It then shows how network analysis may contribute to the analysis of collective action fields that comprise of both organizations and individuals. It covers both studies that focus on 1-mode networks, based on actors’ mutual recognition as relevant partners, and on 2-mode networks in which connections are based on joint involvement in events. It identifies the longitudinal analysis of networks and triangulation strategies, combining qualitative and quantitative data, as two promising areas for future research.
