Adopting a first-person perspective and referring to Uexküll, Volkelt, and Brunswik, the early works of the ethologist Konrad Lorenz focuses on the semiotico-cognitive tools – signs and schemes – through which non-human animal subjects model their perceived reality. Abstract

Adopting a first-person perspective and referring to Uexküll, Volkelt, and Brunswik, the early works of the ethologist Konrad Lorenz focuses on the semiotico-cognitive tools – signs and schemes – through which non-human animal subjects model their perceived reality. This chapter discusses the contribution this semiotic lexicon gave to the nascent ethology, thus trying to (re-)open a rather neglected semiotic field: the study of the Erlebnisse related to instinctive behaviour.
