Through an analysis of various burial contexts in northern Italy, this work aims to investigate the presence of coins, and other small objects, in early medieval burials. Analysing the development of the phenomenon and examining both contexts in which coins seem to maintain their economic value, and finds in which they fall into the category of ornamental objects, greater attention is devoted to the final centuries of the Early Middle Ages, a period marked by socio-cultural transformations. Within this period, it is possible to trace continuity and evolution in funerary practice characterised by a marked rituality that is not always intuitable from archaeological data.

Abstract
Through an analysis of various burial contexts in northern Italy, this work aims to investigate the presence of coins, and other small objects, in early medieval burials. Analysing the development of the phenomenon and examining both contexts in which coins seem to maintain their economic value, and finds in which they fall into the category of ornamental objects, greater attention is devoted to the final centuries of the Early Middle Ages, a period marked by socio-cultural transformations. Within this period, it is possible to trace continuity and evolution in funerary practice characterised by a marked rituality that is not always intuitable from archaeological data.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione
