Aosta Valley: area of epidemic implosion. The paper analyzes the evolution of the epidemic in Valle d’Aosta, one of the most significantly affected Italian regions in the first wave. The spatial organization of this Alpine region is centered on its capital although tourism development has allowed the peripheral valleys to acquire geographic and economic significance. However, the analysis of the epidemic evolution at the scale of Tourist Areas, in relation to over-mortality, reveals that the impact of Covid-19 was not predominantly more severe in the peripheral systems despite the considerable tourist flows. It can therefore be assumed that in the spread and internal incidence of the epidemic in its first wave, the factors of demographic concentration and local spatial interaction were more important than the presence of tourist vectors, however promptly blocked by lockdown.

Abstract
Aosta Valley: area of epidemic implosion. The paper analyzes the evolution of the epidemic in Valle d’Aosta, one of the most significantly affected Italian regions in the first wave. The spatial organization of this Alpine region is centered on its capital although tourism development has allowed the peripheral valleys to acquire geographic and economic significance. However, the analysis of the epidemic evolution at the scale of Tourist Areas, in relation to over-mortality, reveals that the impact of Covid-19 was not predominantly more severe in the peripheral systems despite the considerable tourist flows. It can therefore be assumed that in the spread and internal incidence of the epidemic in its first wave, the factors of demographic concentration and local spatial interaction were more important than the presence of tourist vectors, however promptly blocked by lockdown.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
