Dionysus (and Pentheus) in Delphi: the Prologue of Aeschylus’ Eumenides · The article examines the mention of Dionysus and Pentheus in the prologue of Aeschylus’ Eumenides. The famous lines, where the king of Thebes is said to have been chased by the god «like a hare», are interpreted in the light of traditional Dionysiac imagery: namely the connection between maenadism and hare hunting, also attested in Attic vases of the sixth and fifth century BC., and the recurrent reference to bacchic dances around the Corycian Cave on Mount Parnassus in the texts of Greek tragedy.
