This chapter introduces the project of this volume, laying out the coordinates of the phenomena and the questions addressed in the book. After reviewing the enduring significance of territories in the current historical context, we situate the science of territories in terms of its theoretical foundations and continuing dialogue with other threads in the social sciences. We then present to the reader the volume’s outline and the chapters hosted in it.
