This paper presents an innovative strategy to the design of sub-arrayed planar phased arrays with controlled sidelobe level on a wideband of operation. The tiling of the aperture is performed using sub-arrays of irregular shapes (polyominoes) and the optimization of the sub-array structure is carried out by means of ad-hoc procedure, named “snowball” algorithm, based on a binary Genetic Algorithm (GA). A set of representative examples is reported and discussed also in a comparative fashion with the solutions synthesized using previously proposed methods.

Abstract
This paper presents an innovative strategy to the design of sub-arrayed planar phased arrays with controlled sidelobe level on a wideband of operation. The tiling of the aperture is performed using sub-arrays of irregular shapes (polyominoes) and the optimization of the sub-array structure is carried out by means of ad-hoc procedure, named “snowball” algorithm, based on a binary Genetic Algorithm (GA). A set of representative examples is reported and discussed also in a comparative fashion with the solutions synthesized using previously proposed methods.File in questo prodotto:
