The design of large-scale electromagnetic (EM) smart skins covering the facades of buildings and enabling optimal wireless city coverage is addressed. According to the smart electromagnetic environment (SEE) paradigm, the complex scattering phenomena arising within a urban scenario are profitably exploited to enhance the overall quality-of-service (QoS). Owing to the very large electrical dimensions of the scenario at hand, a suitable System-by-Design (SbD) approach is proposed in order to efficiently optimize the EM characteristics of the smart skins so that the field strength is enhanced within selected non line-of-sight (NLOS) regions. A proof-of-concept is shown to check the effectiveness of such a new design framework.
