The geometric setting of variational calculus in the presence of non-holonomic constraints is reviewed and enhanced. The main improvement is an algebraic approach to the study of the interplay between abnormality index and ordinariness of a given curve. A revisitation of earlier results concerning the formulation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the first variation of a given action functional along a piecewise differentiable curve is presented. Keywords: constrained variational calculus, finite deformations, abnormality index. Mathematics Subject Classification 2010: 65K10, 53B05, 70Q05, 49J, 70D10, 58F05

Abstract
The geometric setting of variational calculus in the presence of non-holonomic constraints is reviewed and enhanced. The main improvement is an algebraic approach to the study of the interplay between abnormality index and ordinariness of a given curve. A revisitation of earlier results concerning the formulation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the first variation of a given action functional along a piecewise differentiable curve is presented. Keywords: constrained variational calculus, finite deformations, abnormality index.
