This chapter includes analysis of child protection systems in two Mediterranean countries: Italy and Greece, which share several relevant similarities. Their welfare systems have both been included in the Southern Europe and Mediterranean (SE/M) cluster, proposed as a fourth cluster where the family plays a pivotal role (among others, Ferrrera, 1996; Gal, 2010). Both countries have been hit hard by the economic crisis, with increasing levels of poverty and unemployment; both have been subjected to austerity measures, albeit at different levels. Both countries lack a structured child protection system. They also have many differences. In order to better understand differences and similarities and the key future challenges they are facing, the following two sections will outline how these countries constructed their policies and practices on child protection. We also include a third section dedicated to immigrant children, since Italy and Greece are a first arrival country in Europe for many immigrants and refugees. Both countries have had to deal with the tension between minors’ rights to be protected, and immigration laws focusing on principles of control and defense. Numbers, methods, and strategies adopted in the two countries will be briefly presented.
