The Italian, and particularly Veronese origins of Romano Guardini are well known; less known, however, are his Trentino roots.They are to be traced back to Guardini's mother, Paola Maria Berardinelli, who was born in Pieve di Bono, in 1862, and was a decisive figure for the future philosopher. In addition to recostructing this biographical element, this paper sees in the maternal side of the family - which roots the philosopher in a sort of borderland between the German and Italian worlds - the very fate of Guardini himself. He occupies, in fact, a border position between two linguistic and cultural motherlands. This makes of him a decidedly European figure.
