In the first part of this study, we describe how, in L’avalée des avalés (1966), Réjean Ducharme, by playing with language, deconstructs French language. Next, we analyze the Italian translation of Maria Vasta Dazzi, to see how she interpreted and explained, in her version entitled La valle delle vergogne (1968), the implicit meanings conveyed by the deconstruction of the language operated by the Quebecois writer. We concentrate primarily on the segments of the novel bearing implicit meanings related to the language of writing, such as puns, neologisms, and idiomatic phrases that requires background knowledge to understand. Has the translator succeeded in rendering this work of linguistic deconstruction employed by Ducharme in his first novel? More generally, we will try to answer the question that haunts any translator: how does one translate the implicit meaning of a literary text?
