The paper focuses on possibility of using timber based panels in seismic strengthening of existing masonry structures. The overall idea is to improve the performance of historical residential buildings under lateral loading, by fixing timber panels to the internal side of the masonry walls. This means a sustainable retrofit solution that permits to reduce seismic vulnerability while preserving the original external façades. The result is a hybrid system where the two components collaborate in resisting the earthquake action. The development of composite action between the reinforcement and the masonry substrate is ensured by mechanical bonding obtained through point-to-point connections. The possibility of adopting dry connections (e.g. screw fasteners) adds to the reversible nature of the system. Speed and ease of assembly are key aspects in determining the effectiveness of such technique, especially if quick response interventions in post-disaster scenarios are considered. Technological aspects and potential applicability issues are discussed and pros and cons of various solutions are presented. Numerical modelling was adopted to investigate the influence of various parameters.
