During the excavation at the castrum of Monselice (Padua, Italy), archaeologists found five male burials. The graves are dated to between the start and mid 7th century and attest the Lombard conquest (601-603) of the fortifications, which had defended the Byzantine borders. The conquest of Monselice allowed Lombards to access routes between the territories of the Veneto region and the exarchate of Ravenna. The location of the graves (near a tower), as well as the quality and variety of the grave goods of the men buried, indicate their importance in the management of the castrum and control of the surrounding territory. The grave goods suggest that this elite group assimilated both German (northern and transalpine) traditions and cultural influences from Byzantine central and southern Italy.

Abstract
During the excavation at the castrum of Monselice (Padua, Italy), archaeologists found five male burials. The graves are dated to between the start and mid 7th century and attest the Lombard conquest (601-603) of the fortifications, which had defended the Byzantine borders. The conquest of Monselice allowed Lombards to access routes between the territories of the Veneto region and the exarchate of Ravenna. The location of the graves (near a tower), as well as the quality and variety of the grave goods of the men buried, indicate their importance in the management of the castrum and control of the surrounding territory. The grave goods suggest that this elite group assimilated both German (northern and transalpine) traditions and cultural influences from Byzantine central and southern Italy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
