This paper focuses on two texts by Jeanette Winterson (1959 - ) – Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? (2011). Whereas the former can be defined as a semi-autobiographical novel, the latter is a memoir, which voices the silences of the novel, and retells the traumas that are left on the margins in Oranges. This intertextual dialogue questions the limit between novel and autobiography, fiction and reality, and discloses the transformative and revelatory power of storytelling and reading.

Abstract
This paper focuses on two texts by Jeanette Winterson (1959 - ) – Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? (2011). Whereas the former can be defined as a semi-autobiographical novel, the latter is a memoir, which voices the silences of the novel, and retells the traumas that are left on the margins in Oranges. This intertextual dialogue questions the limit between novel and autobiography, fiction and reality, and discloses the transformative and revelatory power of storytelling and reading.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
