This paper analyses the Italian translation of Michel Tremblay’s Le cahier noir, published in 2012 under the title Il quaderno nero. First, we provide a general presentation of Michel Tremblay and his linguistic strategies to create in his novels a “joual atmosphere”. Then, we explain how the many particularities of Quebec French contained in Le cahier noir make the work of translation very difficult. Finally, we propose to see how the Italian translators Lorenza Di Lella and Maria Luisa Vanorio transposed the “joual atmosphere” into their Italian version.

Abstract

This paper analyses the Italian translation of Michel Tremblay’s Le cahier noir, published in 2012 under the title Il quaderno nero. First, we provide a general presentation of Michel Tremblay and his linguistic strategies to create in his novels a “joual atmosphere”. Then, we explain how the many particularities of Quebec French contained in Le cahier noir make the work of translation very difficult. Finally, we propose to see how the Italian translators Lorenza Di Lella and Maria Luisa Vanorio transposed the “joual atmosphere” into their Italian version.
