This article focuses on the relationship between some local alpine communities north and south of the Eastern Alps and the role of the elites linked to the monastery of Innichen and the bishoprics of Freising and Säben. In this context it analyzes in particular the mediation role played by the bishops and the local elites which were formed by landowners who were included in a dense “texture” of family, economic and political relations. These relations were “staged” by exchanges of important properties with ceremonies and gestures recorded in a particular type of chartularium: the libri traditionum.

Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between some local alpine communities north and south of the Eastern Alps and the role of the elites linked to the monastery of Innichen and the bishoprics of Freising and Säben. In this context it analyzes in particular the mediation role played by the bishops and the local elites which were formed by landowners who were included in a dense “texture” of family, economic and political relations. These relations were “staged” by exchanges of important properties with ceremonies and gestures recorded in a particular type of chartularium: the libri traditionum.
