The first collection of poetry by an Aboriginal author, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, was published in 1964, under the auspices of a foresightful fellow poet, Judith Wright. This paper analyzes the reciprocal dialogic attitudes of these two representative writers of twentieth-century Australia. It focuses in particular on the autobiogaphical dimension of their writing and on the special dialectic originating between their poetry and Australian history.
