In this paper the author discusses the Pythagorean way of life as pictured by Aristoxenus and Timaeus of Tauromenium. Both had a profound knowledge of Pythagoreanism, but the former took a polemical stance against the Pythagoreans of his times by contrasting them with Pythagoras himself, while the latter had no knowledge of Pythagoreanism from the inside, although his contribution to understanding the Pythagorean hetaireiai appears to be especially important, as, for instance, his reflections on the saying koina ta ton philon clearly show.
