The latest advances on the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm, proposed for enabling the optimization-based design of complex electromagnetic systems and devices, are presented in this work. The integration of a suitable synthesis block and an analysis block based on surrogate modeling is described as a multi-step process aimed at identifying the minimum number of parameters/degrees-of-freedom of the problem at hand, defining the smallest set of representative examples of the input space, and training and using the surrogate model in order to predict the values of the cost function in the optimization step. A representative numerical example regarding the design of an electrically-large three-dimensional radome for aerial vehicles is discussed for validating the proposed SbD methodology
