Hybrid construction systems proved to be valid structural solutions for the implementation of multi-storey buildings, especially if they require only the assembly of prefabricated and modular building elements. The field of hybrid constructions is very wide, since it includes the use of two or more materials in the construction of the structure. If we consider the market of new constructions, nowadays buildings addressing the ‘social housing’ industry need to be considered in detail. The solutions here proposed are composite structural steel-timber elements. Such systems can make the most of the heavily industrialized construction technology typical of steel systems, as well as of the advantages offered by CLT panels -lightness and structural stability- in which the timber element is recognized as an eco-friendly and eco-compatible material. This work falls within an industrial research project (Live to Live Project) aimed at offering efficient, competitive and, above all, sustainable construction solutions for the Italian market of multi-storey residential buildings. In particular, the structures should meet the seismic requirements, even for earthquakes of significant levels of intensity. In addition, they have to fulfill all the requisites associated with the environmental impact on the entire life cycle. The project is meant to define a versatile structural system in which the composite structural elements are highly engineered and can also be produced in the factory. The research activity includes a large number of experimental tests, in particular following the instructions of ‘design by testing’ as specified in the structural Eurocodes. The tests should enable the mechanical characterization of individual components, structural elements and connections, plane pre-assembled elements (floors and shear walls), as well as full-scale three-dimensional prototypes of the construction system. The effects induced by environmental conditions, temperature and humidity on the hygroscopic behaviour of wood and therefore on the overall performance of the building system are also assessed.
