Maria Chapdelaine by Louis Hemon is a classic of French Canada Literature. Published after the death of his author in France in 1914 in serial form and then in Canada in 1916 as a book, this masterpiece has undergone several editions worldwide. In Italy, it has been translated five times: first by Lorenzo Gigli in 1924 and the last by Ugo Piscopo in 1986. This novel contains nearly a hundred linguistic features of French spoken in Canada in the early twentieth century. This study shows strategies adopted by translators to translate Canadianisms into Italian. The strategies adopted by translators are not always consistent and relevant.
