Abstract

The image returned by the road infrastructure can become decisive in shaping the environment, especially in those areas morphologically uncertain, where the natural topographical signs and traces of human settlements are mutually juxtaposed or superimposed without specific prevalence, to reflect this particular point of view on the architecture of the streets can suggest a new interpretation of the very idea of landscape. The strong anthropic appearance of most of our landscapes calls for a reconsideration of the forms historically stratified context that, in areas with strong discontinuity and heterogeneity issues. Within these discontinuities of the settlement net, roads, ramps, associated with their embankments, are often cutting the different geographical areas and accentuate the separation between the morphological parts of the territory instead of connect them. In the division of powers that characterizes contemporary society is taken for granted that the design of buildings and infrastructure do not belong to the same scope of powers of human intelligence: the design of the human environment. In a less conventional view of architectural design and engineering, the parts of the territory intended to roads can become an opportunity to define new architectural landscapes within the city, rather then be regarded as simple blank areas available to be used for traffic. Road works can be designed as architectural elements for a new modelling of the site and not only as technical works to be included in the environment with the least impact. Forms and signs designed to bring about this transformation will be deeply anchored in the morphology of the land from which they arise, but with evidence of realizing autonomous forms; a patent "firmistas" could be possible by avowedly artificial materials such as, for example, reinforced concrete works or steel. Three study cases were an opportunity to test this thesis through three road projects in which work is shaped and conforms to the ground within is designed.
