Refused landscapes: architecture and marginal areas of low and middle mountain The phenomenon of landscapes rejected was investigated by the research unit of Trento in the specific aspects that are linked to the follow two key words: waste and invisibility. The work is based on a succession series of axioms that define the limits of the field investigation: - The development of a territory, its perception as a collective value (landscape) or as economic opportunity (tourism) require the refusal of certain parts; - The denied parts are the necessary waste that allows the exploitation of the other. The wasted landscape could be explained as the landscape composed of scraps of territory places like refuse, necessary support for more strong areas, with different characteristics and roles that make them acceptable to the common feeling while they suspend the belonging of the landscape category. These various waste actions cause a perceptive cancellation that produces a kind of invisibility: requisite that associates the phenomena of wasted landscape. - The identification of these cases occurred in our region through concepts that allowed a view of the subalpine territory: the transfer of traditional analytical categories of urban studies, source ecological – sociological, relevant to degraded, abandoned areas, in the medium and low mountains of Trentino Alto Adige. - The transfer in the field of landscape of the interpretative categories that analyze the production - waste - consumption process of industrial activities in the modern society. The work concentrated on the “discovery” of study cases on normally invisible landscape, without identity or automatically deleted from the perception, from the common sense of seeing and recognizing; excluded areas, not belonging to the places of the landscape (European Convention of Landscape). The survey conducted by the research group tried to define the not recognized places in a now provisionally series of rejected landscape types: border landscape, fortified landscape, agricultural production landscape, wind energy landscape, interclosed landscape, mining landscape, mobility landscape. These refused landscapes, within their potential, are reserves of land, consumed but recyclable, waiting to be recognized: wasted areas not perceived, where a project action can reveal and propose unexpected landscapes.
