“THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN” FROM ENGLAND TO GERMANY TO RUSSIA The monograph, which brings together the contributions of six Slavic and German scholars of the Universities of Padua and Trento, retraces the long and complex story of the editions, the translations and the loose adaptations of the “Adventures of Baron Münchhausen”. Starting from the 18th century English and German prototypes, the analysis focuses on some emblematic stages of the evolution in the 1800s and 1900s of a book which immediately became part of the popular tradition and later a classic of children’s literature, and which continues to lend itself to modern interpretations and new readings. What particularly emerges from the studies carried out is that, even though the “Adventures” have acquired different artistic features over the years, they have always maintained a marked satirical slant connected to current topics. What also appears is that, since the tales are often open to a highly speculative interpretation, they have been used for somewhat hidden responses to burning social-political and ethical-aesthetic issues.
