The contribution aims at exploring the role played by international jurisprudence as a crucial factor in the development of indigenous peoples' rights, especially with reference to the relationship between indigenous peoples and the environment. To that end, it analyses comprehensively the relevant jurisprudence and quasi-jurisprudence of human rights monitoring bodies, both at the global and regional level, critically emphasising their creative approach in elaborating effective, innovative and strict principles and rights in this area, as well as their potential impact outside of the human rights sphere.
