Abstract

This article describes my Ph.D. project. In particular, it is aimed at giving an overview of the phenomenon under discussion, namely the coexistence and competition between loanwords and endogenous words in Old Icelandic. Examples are given from three different textual typologies, as they are taken from a religious text (The Icelandic Homily Book), a law-book (The Grágás), and one of the Icelandic family sagas (Egils saga).
