The article examines the historical evolution and the ecclesiological vision of the patriarchates of Constantinople and Rome, and traces the origins of their conflict over whom has the authority to recognize autocephaly. A discussion of the issue of Constantinople’s recognition of the Ukrainian Church’s autocephaly, Moscow’s reactions and the consequences on the Orthodox communio follows.
