Abstract

From the 30s of the 5th Century to the Peace of Antalcidas the collection of the dekate in the Bosphorus was a significant item of the tax revenues of Athens through which the city reconsidered her own imperial system. The historical sources, and Xenophon particularly, underline, in 411, the Athenian generals' efforts in in the Straits to prevent the financial collapse of Athens and consider positively the re-establishment by Thrasybulos of a dekateuterion at Byzantium in 390/89. Thrasybulos’ expedition in the Bosphorus impress a turning point in the political and financial relationship between Athens and its allies, which allowed the city to reaffirm on new basis its hegemonic aspirations in the Aegean despite the general’s death at Aspendos and the King’s Peace in 387/6.
