The paper focuses on the argument structure of phrasal verbs in Romance languages (Italian and Northern Italian dialects). Several semantic classes of Romance phrasal verbs with a locative particle are illustrated. They all present a similar argument structure (with a figure/ground argument and a located/locum argument). In some classes, however, one argument can be implicit. Its existence is marked by the particle itself, and its semantic content is suggested by a pragmatic, or contextual, or encyclopedic knowledge.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the argument structure of phrasal verbs in Romance languages (Italian and Northern Italian dialects). Several semantic classes of Romance phrasal verbs with a locative particle are illustrated. They all present a similar argument structure (with a figure/ground argument and a located/locum argument). In some classes, however, one argument can be implicit. Its existence is marked by the particle itself, and its semantic content is suggested by a pragmatic, or contextual, or encyclopedic knowledge.
